  • Winter Light in Umbria:

A December Week of Photography, Fire, and Village Tradition

    December 7 - 14

This is not simply a photography workshop. It’s an immersive experience set in the stone heart of Vallo di Nera, a pristine medieval village in Umbria where life moves at a different pace, especially in winter.
For one week, we live and work together inside the rhythm of the season—sharing meals, walking ancient cobblestone lanes, and photographing the quiet beauty of village life as it unfolds around us. Led by photographer Nick Kelsh, the experience blends daily shooting with in-the-moment guidance, helping you see and respond to light, people, and place in a natural, straightforward way.
Here, the setting isn’t a backdrop—it becomes the subject. From early morning light on stone walls to firelit gatherings and centuries-old traditions, everything we experience becomes part of the work.
Evenings settle into long dinners, time by the fire, and the kind of conversations that come easily when the day slows down. This is a chance to step into a different way of seeing—where photography, culture, and everyday life come together in a small Umbrian village at its most authentic.

Vallo di Nera: Where Winter Light Comes Alive

When you step through the medieval gates of Vallo di Nera, you enter a village that feels unchanged by time—especially in December. The light is lower, softer, more deliberate. Stone walls hold the warmth of the day, and the pace slows in a way that lets you actually see.

This is where we work. Not in a staged environment, but inside real village life. Morning light on quiet lanes, smoke rising from chimneys, neighbors gathering, traditions unfolding. It’s all there, and it becomes the subject.

Photography with Nick: A Way of Seeing

This is not about chasing perfect shots. It’s about learning how to see what’s already in front of you.

Each day, Nick Kelsh will guide the group with a simple, direct approach—working with light, paying attention to people, and responding honestly to what’s happening in the moment. There’s time together in the morning to frame the day, and ongoing guidance as we move through it.

By midweek, we begin looking at images together, using what everyone is seeing as part of the process. It’s relaxed, practical, and grounded in real experience—not theory.

    Fire, Food, and Village Tradition

December in Umbria is about gathering.

We step into that rhythm throughout the week—from a holiday feast for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, to the Foccaraccia, where the entire village gathers around a towering bonfire lit in a centuries-old tradition. There’s no staging here—you’re part of it.

Back at the house, the 200-year-old outdoor oven comes to life for a focaccia night with Giacomo and Anastasia. Meals are long, seasonal, and shared. These aren’t side experiences—they’re central to the week, and they offer some of the most meaningful moments to photograph.

    Home Base: Casa della Zia

Casa della Zia is where everything comes together.

At the end of a small uphill lane, the house sits just above the village, with views out over the Valnerina. It’s where we start the day, return in the afternoon, and gather in the evenings. There’s always something on the table—coffee, wine, snacks—and space to unwind.

Fireplaces glow in the colder months, the garden becomes a gathering place, and the rhythm of the week settles in naturally. It’s not a hotel experience. It’s a lived-in, shared space that becomes part of the retreat itself.

    Small Group Intimacy

This is a small group by design. It changes everything.

You get time with Nick, space to work at your own pace, and the chance to really connect with the people around you. Conversations carry from morning into dinner. Photos get shared, talked about, and built on as the week goes on.

It’s not a drop-in workshop. It’s a shared experience that builds day by day.

    A Week That Unfolds Naturally

The days aren’t rushed or overplanned. We move with the light, the weather, and what’s happening around us.

Some mornings begin quietly in the village. Other days take us out to places like Spoleto, Montefalco, Assisi, or Norcia—each offering a different rhythm, different light, and new ways to see. There’s time to wander, to stop for coffee, to follow something that catches your eye.

It’s structured enough to give the week shape, but open enough to let real moments happen.

Villages, Nativity Scenes, and the Season

December is a special time to be here.

Across Umbria, towns come alive with handmade presepi—nativity scenes tucked into stone corners, church alcoves, and small village spaces. Some are simple, others incredibly detailed, all of them part of a tradition that’s still very much alive.

We’ll see them as we move through places like Spoleto, Montefalco, Bevagna, Assisi, and Norcia—but Vallo di Nera is where you’ll feel it most. It’s quieter, more intimate. You’re not just visiting—you’re inside it.

Between the villages, the decorations, and the slower pace of the season, there’s a different kind of atmosphere here in December. It’s subtle, but it stays with you—and it’s something you can’t really replicate any other time of year.
